Valentine's day Planter Boxes - WIP
I'm having a short break before I make the undercarriage for my book case.
I've received a commission to make six planter boxes similar to those in the first photo. As I didn't have detailed dimensions I designed the box to fit the overall size supplied by the client.

The next step was to dimension lengths of the recycled timber (90 x 12mm), cut the slot for the bottom and apply several coats of oil to the inside of the sides. It's not only easier to do at this stage, but makes it easier to remove any glue squeeze-out. I then cut all the sides - six of each.

Because it would be difficult if not impossible to clamp up a 10-sided figure with an interior angle greater than 180 degrees, I made a jig that allows me to glue up half the sides of a box at a time. Because the box will probably be exposed to moisture I glued up using polyurethane glue, and clamped it in the jig using strips of rubber cut from an old inner tube.

Nice little commission to test out your problem solving skills and a neat jig that came out of it.

With all the halves glued up and cleaned, l I set to making the bottoms. I dressed some thin boards and edge jointed them to give sufficient width, then gave them several coats of oil. I made a template of masonite and test fitted it, then used it to mark out and cut six bottoms.

With all the bottoms made, the next step was to assemble the two halves and bottom. Because of the awkward shape I had several options planned for holding the halves together while the glue set. The first was to clamp glueing blocks to the sides that went together, and put larger clamps on the blocks to hold them. I did a dry test and found that this gave only limited success, as the blocks slid on the oiled inside surfaces and it was difficult to fit the larger clamps into the box. Another less preferred option was to put a large clamp across the flat surfaces at the widest part of the heart. The danger here was that the clamping would over-stress the other joints. The final option, that I eventually used, was to use stretched masking tape on the outside and gaffer tape on the inside. The gaffer tape stuck sufficiently well to the oiled surfaces to hold the sides together while the glue set.

All those tricky joints have come up very neat, as good as any right angle joint.
