Thread: Walnut Jewellery box with Neat hinge

I must admit that is a Verry verrry nice box with craftsman ship I can only admire and hope to one day live up to.

I am a very new woodworker, learning a lot from this site and youtube and books and would love a little more detail on the lid if you don't mind?

I just can't wrap my head around it. I thought I understood perfectly when you said you framed the birch ply then put that lovely veneer in the middle over the ply. I thought you had 25mm wide pieces of walnut, routed a groove, put in the ply, surrounded by some edge banding, and made it to fit the box dimensions perfectly.

But then I saw the second picture where the lid width matches the box sides. it looks as if the lid was sawn off after the box was completed and was just part of the sides I got quite confused.

I considered you meant you framed the ply then glued the walnut strips to the outside and a veneer in the middle but realised the walnut strips would just be floating and sit far above the veneer.

Anyway, as you can see- I'm lost!!

Sorry to ask this again, as I know you covered it, and it's so nice of you to tell people how you did this, I just would love to someday be able to make boxes like this
