BeautifuL!!!!
I would use the wooden hinges. For me they would add that final touch of real class.

ajw, loving those wooden hinges. As mentioned above. Very classy. At first I was thinking it would look cool to stagger the colours from one section of hinge to the other...but I think you've got it right, having it as one continuous line of colour through both sections. Nice work.

Finished
Well, it's finished.
I ran out of time - so I've skipped the hinges on this box. My daughter wants a new jewellery box, so I'll save them for that.
Finished to 800 grit on the outside (600 inside), and then used the 1/3 Tung Oil 1/3 BLO 1/3 Satin Poly mix. Sealing coat is this mix diluted with turps. 4 coats overall. Final finish is eee wax and buffed.
One thing the photos reveal - the coffee table needs to be sanded back and refinished. Scratches and dings everywhere!
What do you think of the box?
Cheers,
ajw

I have to confess I'm glad you didn't put the hinges on this box as I think they would clash with the main timber colours. For me, the walnut and sassy are more than enough for the box and adding the hinges would make it too busy, even take the focus away from the two beautiful timbers. However, if you made hinges from walnut with a sassy accent, now that would be in keeping with your design, imho.
Regardless of that, I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your WIP and seeing a georgous box come to life.
cheers

Thanks Wendy. I think you're right. Sometimes less is better. Making the hinges was an interesting exercise, and I think I'll use timber hinges on a box soon, but I think they'll be made of the same timber as the box. There are some nice examples in other threads on this forum.
I'm also keen to make a 6-sided box. I've seen one on Alex Springall's website that really appeals to me. What's the old saying? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?.
Thanks for your feedback Wendy. Very encouraging.

It's finished up a treat, looks fantastic.
I'm also agreeing with wendy regarding the hinges, looks nice, neat and clean as it is.
Well done.
Steven.

Great looking box, I'm glad you ran out of time for the hinges, I think they would have clashed.

I gave the box to my friend. He actually choked up and had a tear in his eye. Never had quite that reaction before. I think he's upset to be leaving, but it's a good career move for him, so I wish him well. Of course, it could have been the overwhelming smell of freshly applied wax that caused his reaction!
People get a real thrill from receiving a hand-made gift like this. It's nice to be able to create something that people value.
Thanks for all the feedback along the way. It makes the time taken to do a WIP worthwhile.
cheers,
ajw
