    Default Watch Box Dimensions

    Hi All,

Looking at making a watch box for some watches.

The question is twofold as to what internal dimension should I aspire to for the watch compartments, and also where is the best place to source the pillows from?

    Thanks

    George

Almost 100 views and no response to what I would have thought would have been a simple answer.

I don’t know the answer to this so I was hoping someone would answer also as I was looking at watch boxes in the bungendore wood gallery recently and was wondering the same.

My assumption is some soft foam or rubber underlay with sections cut out to the width to support the width of watch bands and then the foam covered in some felt material tightly wrapped as it’s own piece that’s fit to the dimensions of the box for a nice fit.

That’s if you were flushing multiple watches per draw or box.

If it were just one you could always pickup something like this to extract for your own box

But ultimately I don’t know so take this as my 2cents

I don't know what the dimensions should be for the compartments but the pillows are readily available on Ebay.
Here are 2 types at a quick search and both available in Aus.

    HI George,

I was hoping someone might come up with a better answer than I can. I've made and sold quite a few watch boxes, but they are not something I like making. Mucking about cutting glass etc, recessing it into the lid and so forth. I just scrolled back to my last watch box I sold on Etsy to find you some measurements that I use. As I always include a couple of pics of the measurements on my site. I don't have any for sale at present. But these are the pics I used to show the sizes. The watch pillow itself is obtainable via an easy search on ebay, I don't really like it, but its all I can find. There are also more of a pillow shape available but they are rather large and would take a larger compartment than I provide for. I said to my wife surely you could make something like this, she said not a chance, I'm not mucking around doing that.

The walls of my compartments are velvet lined to protect the watch and there is a nice padded velvet base in each compartment also. A lot of work doing all that lining, but they do sell.

Get them flocked. Waaaaaay easier than trying to DIY with real velvet.

I bought one of those flocking kits some years ago, ended up in the bin. (IMO) the result looks very cheap.

The size of each compartment is determined by the choice of pillow, so deciding on a pillow is where you need to start.

I sell a watch boxes through WIGWOOD, the six watch box (2 x 3) are 260 mm x 210 mm x 110 mm. I make "C" clips via steam bending and laminating technique with a Kangaroo leather outer lining. I went for the "C"clips as the "pillows" really didn't look right....Plus I'm no good at sewing! Steam bending such small forms is a challenge, but rewarding once you crack the code!

Hi George, I am in the process of building a couple of prototypes. I found inspiration and some suggested dimensions from the manufacturer below.

For lining/flock/felt etc - personally, I find the self-adhesive Baize (got mine from CWS online) is excellent to work with. I wrap it on some 1mm stiff card and line the compartments. If you want a glass top, Museum glass is expensive but available and nothing beats it for reflective and presentation qualities.
