The wife says it is looking better than her original thoughts, so I will crack on with it today and get the top done in the same vein, so perhaps another couple of days and display.
Made an early start this morning on the lid, the reason being that there are a number of glue set ups required for what I have got in mind so there will be at least a couple of sessions today.
Sorted out some more small pieces and laid them out on a paper template.
Cut to shape and glued the first stage.
Will give them three hours to set. I use titebond 3 and spots of superglue dropped on titebond as I place together.Last edited by jow104; 12th July 2010 at 07:18 PM. Reason: It would not let me post another addition to my thread??????????

Looking good. Thanks for the wips. This will be a unique tissue box. Did you have a magnet thingy for finding your throatplate screw among the sawdust - it is absolutely essential to have small magnet on a stick.

Second session today.
Preparing aperture with purple heart triangles.
Glued into position with titebond3 and superglue again.
Further marking out of aperture.
And shapes enlarged using one of those jap saws without a back frame.
In the rough it appears to have gone well.
However the misses is winding me up, she has found some new stock of tissues.
I wonder how many different patterns I can make for this style?woody U.K.

Did some overtime today, went out this evening and cleaned up the lid in the thicknesser and it went smoothly even with the cross grains.
Cut the lid to outside dimensions of carcass and rebated underside to fit.
To cover up end grain of carcass at top.
I was able to get a round over on lid and also get a square fitting edge to carcass hiding all the end grain.
Glued on the lid.
Hopefully I should do the sanding and give it a coat of shellac and then wax tomorrow evening. (having the day off Wednesday)woody U.K.

Its completed and I know its different but it goes to prove that modern glues can work with end grains. The joints would not break easily any more than conventional joins.
A selection of boxes awaiting new homes.
Most probably switching over to a new shape and size box for a change, also this season might be a short one for me, I have got a cataract op. coming up.woody U.K.

Love your boxes. Thanks for sharing them. As a patchworker with fabrics I hope one day to be able to make things with timberpatches.

This is my favourite of your wonderful boxes. Thanks for sharing. You know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, don't you? Well, I'm going to make a box using all my small pieces, just like yours!
cheers,

It came out absolutely splendid, and your ability to thickness those fabricated pieces with grain running every which way is an inspiration too.
Good luck with your cataract operation. I have had both of mine done over a two year period and the improvement of my vision is excellent. The worst part is remembering to put drops in the eyes for a few weeks afterwards.
