Beautiful work Andy. You must be very happy with that outcome. What are they going to be used for?

Andy
Just had a look at FenceFurnitures piccy ( here if anyone wants to have a look post 105) very speccy box.
Was wondering whether finger grips/grooves on the inside of each end of the tray might assist in lifting it outregards

How good is that, eh!!! Well done Andy, and many thanks for sharing this great WIP. Myself and many others have been inspired by this, and have learnt lots.
One question, how did you fix the smartHinges to the jarrah? Did you have steel screws to use first, then replace them with the brass ones? If so, what size steel screws did you use?regards,
Dengy

AlexS mentions using magnets to hold the lid down. Can you give us some idea of how you do this? Do you have magnets in the lid and the box set up to attract, or just a piece of steel and a magnet. I would imagine 2 magnets would be hard to separate.

Sorry for the very late replies, I've been SO busy over the last week with little time to do anything.
I pre drill the holes and use the screws that came with the hinges (it would be ideal to have some steel screws but I didn't at the time) and screw them into the drilled holes (no hinge attached). Because they are a phillips head screw and quite small, I seem to slip more often that I'd like and this marks the screws. So I keep a couple of "pre drill" screws aside and use them just for this purpose. I really dislike the phillips head and will look for square headed scews to replace them.

This is my second box using the Smart hinges and both have closed without a gap at the front. I think this is because the inserts/lining that I put on the inside of the lid helps it stay shut.
But this got me thinking, if I were to use magnets where would you put them? I was thinking to drill one or two holes on the inside of the box (which wouldn't be seem because the lining will hide them) and perhaps on the inside of the lid and insert magnets and use some sort of wooden plug to hide the gap?

It's hard to put magnets anywhere that they won't be seen. I usually put gold coloured ones at either end of the front, where the lid and bottom meet. If you don't like the look of them there, you might be able to put then into the inside of the lid sides and the outside of the liner sides.
Small rare earth magnets seem to need to be almost in contact to work, so I don't think you could put them under a plug. In the case of your boxes, the magnets would only be to give a feel that it is positively closed, they wouldn't serve any other practical purpose.
Have the clients seen the first sample? If so, I hope they appreciate it.

Thanks Alex. I might do some tests with scrap wood and magnets to see if I can get the feel I'm looking for.
I've taken this photo from Brett's thread (FenceFurniture) of my box. Brett was nice enough to come around and also have me over at his place to take some photos. Thanks mate
I should also mention that I was so close to finishing the box and only had two routing operations to complete on my router table when it suddenly stopped working. I was so frustrated and messaged Fletty to ask if I could use his router table. Within 5 minutes he'd called and insisted I come around to finish the job - Thankyou mate
