Thread: WIP - 2 display boxes

Hi Andy, would it be better to sand and then shellac the timber before you cut it into lengths for the sides and do the dovetail joints? I thought that sanding the dovetails after they are made could be a bit risky, changing the thickness of the sides of the joints.

I do sand to 180 before cutting to length and dovetailing. I don't go any further because I'm running the pieces through the table saw and clamping for dovetailing etc so the surface is likely to get a little rough during this process.

So once I've completed the dovetails and everything is done I sand the inside but NOT the dovetails. I stop at the base line. But you're right, sanding the dovetails would change the fit.

Today I cut the support pieces for the trays. I put a simple rabbet on the under side and got a nice fit on the shooting board.

Then I made up a quick sketch of the measurements of the box and the frame and panel lid. I wasn't sure what the exact measurement that I wanted so I put it on paper and liked the proportions.

Then I used my domino for the joinery.

Both trays are now completed. All I need to do now is finish both lids, sand and oil the box then insert the leather backboard to go into the trays. I'll also come up with a small lid pull and that should complete it.

Unfortunately I have this thing called work and it takes me away from my workshop!


But I did make some small progress today. I made the lid for one of the boxes out of huon pine using tongue and groove joinery.

I'm quite happy with my choice of huon for the lid. It really allows the oak to stand out and not look too busy.

I have a similar problem _ I'm retired and as such should have virtually unlimited shed time
got about an hour today between errands but did sell a pen
so I'm again behind in my planned work - what a bummer!

Nice work. The two timbers work well together, and IMHO, the huon emphasise the oak.

Thanks again for sharing, Andy. I like the lid, but does it allow for seasonal movement of the timber?

Yes I've allowed a few mm for wood movement. To hold the lid in place I plan to use a small rubber strip that the lid can expand in to and contract whilst still being secured.

I've been busy lately so progress slowed down.

I got one coat of oil on the Huon pine lid box. The rosewood lid box needs sanding and a coat of shellac.
The third box is another order and I'll finish it in this batch. The inside is a little different and I'll post photos when I get to that stage.
