    Done!
I just finished the box. Enough storage hopefully for all his cufflinks, watches etc.

I used thinned shellac as a sanding sealer with 4 coats of Kunos livos oil (#244).

Nice work - I like the proportions and, of course, the wood.

Thanks Alex and Nathan for the kind comments.

The velvet (I'm pretty sure that's what it is) has come up rather light in the pics. In person it's actually much darker, however I think I'll use black next time.

I think I'll put this style/design of box a rest for a while. The next box will likely be mitred with keys or hand cut dovetails with a frame and panel lid.

Have you considered using suede leather (pigskin splits) for the lining? Not much dearer than velvet and looks classy. Beware of black velvet - it looks good, especially with silver jewellery, but will show every speck of dust.

I've seen you use it before and briefly looked it up. I'll do some more research.

    How do you apply it?

Drop by if you want a bit to try.
You can use contact adhesive, or Titebond, applied to both surfaces, allowed to dry and then Ironed on. Put a sheet of brown paper between the iron and the suede.

Thanks Alex. When I'm back in Sydney I'll come around and check it out.

I knew something wasn't right with the velvet in the tray. As it turned out I applied it the wrong way around.
So this morning I fixed it up, and in my opinion looks better.

I also kept some of the huon pine shavings from my block plane and put them in a little bag for my brothers partner (smells amazing! ).

So, I had a liitle bit of free time last night, I thought I'd google suede pigskin splits, just for info, a bit of research, it was TOO easy, so easy in fact that by the time I'd got my wits about me I'd ordered 2!!

I get mine from NSW Leather. If you get a chance, go there - it's like Alladin's cave.
