    Default WIP - Cufflinks box

    Hi all,
I am making a cufflink box for my brother as a Thankyou gift for being my best man at my wedding. I'm using Jarrah, Birds eye maple and Huon pine. It measures 380mm long x 230mm wide x 107mm high and 12mm thick. It's going to have a felt lined tray with dividers and more storage under the tray.

My Triton router is in for repair so I needed to make a router table to house my other router. I ended up screwing my router to the MDF using the base plate screws. I clamped it to my bench and added a support roller. It actually works pretty good - the only annoying problem is the micro adjusting I get with the Triton is non existent with this setup. Below is a photo of it.

I resawed the Jarrah (didn't have stock wider for the base panel), Maple and Huon and dressed to size.

I then cut the dovetails using my Gifkins jig using my A10 template. I then used my HNT Gordon A55 to smooth the Maple and then used my router table to "raise the panel" to fit into the rebates in the box.
The box is now glued up. Tomorrow I'll split it and start working on the tray and dividers, hopefully I'll be close to finished tomorrow afternoon so I can get the first coat of shellac on at night.

Looking good, nice choice of timbers - they go well together.

I split the box and cut the dividers today.

Tomorrow I'll get the tray and dividers done, cut the hinges and prepare for finishing.

The photos are pretty bad quality. I'm looking into buying a better camera so I can start taking better quality images, so please bear with me until I do get one

That's a quite pretty progress. Did you use table saw ? I can't wait to see it done.

    Thumbs up

I second what everyone up there has had to say about this Greg!!

Another Gifkins user! Good to see.

I am extremely jealous of that HNT!

I only got a short time in the shop yesterday but managed to get the tray started and cut the hinges.
Just need to finish the tray including curving the sides.

I will be done by today with the first coat of thinned shellac going on tonight.

It's certainly coming along at a pace Andy. Certainly quicker than the Gifkins box I started a month ago! Excellent choice of timbers too - looking forward to your finished piece.

What happened to the Triton router? I guess he micro adjustment is something we take for granted.

    Nathan.

    Thanks for the comments.

The Triton router has a plastic cover that covers the switch. It more or less got stuck and I took my frustration out of it trying to fix it - all is good now, I definitely missed it!

    Almost done!
I cut the curve on the router table using Flettys jig.
    uploadfromtaptalk1365145984774.jpg

Cut the dividers for the tray and used my shooting board to sneak up on the final size.
    uploadfromtaptalk1365146052545.jpg

Then snuck up on the tray sides with my block plane (I'd be lost without it) to get a perfect piston fit.

Tomorrow I'll install the tray bottom, install the hinges and finish sanding the box. I'll have a coat of shellac and 1 coat of oil on by tomorrow evening.

    Andy
