Ok I've cut the box and installed the hinges.

They are 10mm barrell hinges. I measured with my combo square from each of the sides, then centred and drilled the 4 holes. For some reason the lid is sitting a few mm proud on the front, therefore the back is sitting proud of the lid. It's not a big issue as I can plane them flush, but does anyone have an idea as to why this has happened?

Can you post a close-up photo? Might make it easier to see what's happened.

I think I know what I did wrong, i'm prety sure I measured from the wrong face.

Anyway, the box is finished with it's first coat of oil.
I was going to sand it back with 0000 after 24 hours then apply another coat and do this twice.

How does everyone else apply their danish oil?

I took a photo of the finished box with the lid down but the quality was shocking so i'll try and get another one soon.

It looks like the depth of the right hand hinge lid is set too deep andy, if this is the case upon opening it would have created a bind as it got to its full extension before the other hinge and pulled the inner part of it out.

Not too sure without seeing the box itself but thats how it looks in the 2nd pic, it might be just the shadow or light playin tricks with me eye's. That would explain the small gapping as well as that side hinge is swinging on a different more extended arc than the other.

    Neal.

PS: sorry to hear about your dog, and lovely box btw.

Hi Dan, Try here Slitting Saw & Slotting Saw Holder With 1/2" Shank | eBay .They also carry the blades. I use 3 mm blades for the miter keys and .8 to slice the lids off the boxes. The .8 mm is a very fine tooth and small gullet and does have trouble clearing the waste.

    The box is now finished.

I think next time I instal barrell hinges i'll do a much better job. I didn't drill deep enough on the right side, therefore it's sitting a little proud. It still opens and closes perfectly though. I continue to learn with each project.

I'm glad the purple heart didn't turn brown as it did with one of the chopping boards I made (although it's slowly going back to purple)

    Thanks for the comments,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
If you want to reseat the bottom barrel try removing the expansion screw on both bottom barrels and with the lid closed gently lift, keeping the hinges closed, if your fit is not too tight both hinges should come clear without damage....do NOT force them out as they are likely to part company at the middle hinge. When removed re-drill the hole/s and re-insert....be gentle!
    It's a great box.
    Good luck

Sorry about your dog, but that is a lovely box. I love the purpleheart accents, the colour is really vivid in the photos. Purpleheart seems to be a bit ht and miss as to how much purple you get from it but I have found in the past that a bit of time in the sun will really bring out the colour.

    Thanks for the kind comments

I like using purple heart, but it's got to be subtle in my opinion. I like it even more when it stays purple after the finish is applied.

    Thanks again,
    Andy
