Default WIP - A memory box

    Hey all,

Sadly two weeks ago one of our dogs passed away. I thought i'd make a box to put some of his belongings in. My partner wanted me to use as many timber species as I could.

I didn't think of doing a WIP so I havn't taken many pics as of yet. I'll make sure I take more from now on.

The box is made out of Red Mahogany, and the lid and base is Silky oak, Purpleheart, Red silky oak and White beech.

As you can see from the pics, I have my spline jig out that I made a little while ago. I'm going to use the White beech for the splines. This is my first mitred box, so i'm learning as I go.

    Andy

Sorry to hear the sad news about your dog. you have done a good job on the box and a nice mix of timbers. Well done.

    Looking good Andy.

Do you have a square-ground blade for use with the spline jig? The blade in my saw cuts a distinctive "v" shape which I don't like when I've tried to cut out a section to put a spline into.

    cheers,

    ajw

I got a week off work now after being away last week.

I cut the splines on the jig using a story stick (pic 1).

I just got to plane the splines flush, seperate the lid and instal the barrell hinges.

I had a 4.2mm spital upcut bit that I was going to use to split the box. Iv'e had problems with this paticular bit slipping and damaging my work (see routing forum). So I might use my table saw to split most of it, then use a hand saw and hand plane to remove the rest.

Hi andy, sorry to hear you lost your dog i know just how you feel after losing my mate of 17 years.
    Your box looks fantastic.

On the subject of splitting your box have you ever tried using a slitting saw in your router table.

    Regards

    Harold

Sorry the slitting saw holder I posted above is a 2 morse taper and therefore no good for the router you would need this one with a 1/2" shank.

    Hi,

Yes I've seen them before. The closest thing I have is a slot cutting bit, however I may look into your idea in the future.
