Hi ajw.
Your boxes came up beautifully and i really enjoyed your WIP.
I have used the method you chose for cutting the lid off at the table saw or router table on a couple of occasions. I have found that depending on the timber used, the lid has moved slightly after being cut off and the two pieces (box and lid) dont sit flat anymore requiring sanding to get a nice fit. This happened on a redgum box (admittedly an unpredictable timber at the best of times) but on others aswell.
Did you encounter this problem making these boxes (or any other's for that matter) and if so what method did you use to rectify it.
I would love to make some boxes out of blackwood and walnut some time in the future.
Thanks.
Steven.

Hi Steven,
Yes, I've had that problem. Using spacers to keep the lid and base separated helps ensure the lid doesn't "collapse" back into the blade. I also use the sanding board to take out any unevenness. Even with this, slight variations can still develop. That's one of the reasons for putting a chamfer on the join. I like the look of it, and it helps disguise any small gaps.
My bandsaw isn't big enough to use to separate the lid, so I'm stuck with the table saw or router. I find the table saw a bit quicker.
For some boxes, I make the lid as a separate component, but then you have the issue of making it fit perfectly.
Thanks for the kind feedback. I appreciate it.

Thanks Bob. Glad that the WIP hasn't lost its pictures - some older posts have had the pictures deleted a while back.
I'm about to make some more boxes in a batch- 4 this time. No WIP. Process will be much the same as the last lot, although I'll probably use dovetails this time.
Thanks again for your nice comments.
cheers,
ajw

You're welcome aj, pity some of the threads couldn't be saved by a mod to a 'keeper place' so guys could refer to them always. This one sure is one of those, timeless advice contained therein. Well put together and thoughtful commentary.
I'd love to batch out some boxes similar to that now myself Now where oh where do I find some reasonably priced Sassy? Must send a message to Tas Sculptor!

Beautiful boxes aj, only bettered by the illustrated step-by-step guide. Absolutely invaluable to a newbie like me - about to create my first box. Thanks in advance!
