Wooden Hinges
In an unfortunate turn of events and I’m not going to say how or why, but let’s just say sometimes short cuts take longer!!
anyway, I had made some Huon Pine hinges for the medal box under construction, and the Huon was to incorporate a piece of timber given to me by the box’s recipient, but as noted above one exploded and my reconstruction of said hinge was dismal to say the least. So back to the drawing board and I made some more.
in the middle of the pic is the old ones, the right had one was the one that blew apart. I have since made a few more sets out of Rock maple and also Southern Silky Oak, the same as the lid insert. RM on LHS of pic, Silky on RHS

They still need a final sand and finish, and countersunk holes drilled.
more to come as I progress

No, funnily enough that was the last thing to blow out. If you have a look at the right hand hinge you’ll see some dark lines of where the glue is. The pin actually held it together. Let’s just say that there was some machinery involved as I thought it would take too long to sand down due to being different thicknesses. Not quite sure how that happened.

Here a pic of the hinges pre-finish install. The box has 3coats of Kunos Livos #244
hinges are Silky Oak to match lid

The first set was a bit fancier but I didn’t want to start mucking around and end up ruining them.
more pics soon

Nice job. Did you use any jigs to drill the pin hole or was it just lined up and done on a drill press?

Cheers Dallas, I knocked up a quick jointed 3way block and screwed to a base. I eyeball the centre and then use a 3mm bradpoint to drill.

I am pressed for time on this box so am just getting them done, but I want to experiment with making more and doing different spacing. At the moment I am sanding flush, turning at 90deg then drilling. But I might move out 0.5mm from each side before drilling if that makes sense.
heres a few in the jig
