    Default More wooden hinges

I was recently inspired by KRH's excellent thread on making wooden hinges at http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=32590 so I gave it a go. I altered the process a little though because I found the glue up phase a little tricky in terms of getting glue squeeze out on the moving parts.

Instead of using 6mm stock I went with 3/4" and ripped that into 3mm strips (pic 1). I then cut these to 100mm lengths (pic 2) and laminated these together but offset them to get the finger pattern (pic 3); you don't have to be too accurate in terms of how long the fingers are here because you will trim them later, as long as each one is an equal length to the one next to it.

Once the glue was set I ripped the whole lot down the middle so I effectively have two hinges 100mm x 8mm (pic 4), which I planed and sanded to 100mm x 6mm (pic 5). Then I cut these down to 50mm lengths and turned the two pieces around to interlock the fingers at 90 degrees (pic 6). Next I trimmed off the overhanging fingers and, keeping the hinge at 90 degrees, rounded over the ends (pic 7 and 8). Then I drilled a 3mm hole and inserted the hinge pin, which is a bamboo skewer, just like KRH (pic 9).

Seems to work well but I wouldn't have even thought to give it a try without the groundwork being done by KRH.

    Cheers,

    Steve

That's pretty clever, never heard of wooden hinges. It would certainly make any box stand out. Good work.

Good idea Bodgia, I was thinking along the same lines glad to see it works.
    Reality is no background music.
