    Well, you got me on this one, Peter. If you look closely, you will see where the cut for the splines exited the top of the box. Actually, this 'star-shaped' pattern at each corner looks intentional so I don't think it detracts from the look.

    Here's a close-up that also reveals a fairly sloppy mitre, though this is very exaggerated in the blow-up of the photo.
