Irregular box design
AlexS's post here put me in mind of my design for a box that had no 90 degree angles, no vertical sides and each corner at a different angle. Was tricky enough to draw, and would be a challenge for me to make. Anyone care to have a go?

G'day Zenwood,
I'll give it a miss this lifetime......gasp!

Hi Zenwood. I used your spreadsheet to calculate the mitre angles of my box. For your box, the angles could either be calculated using spherical trig (I think - long time since I've done it) or by drawing it. The old surveyor's adage applies - if you can't calc it, plot it; if you can't plot it, calc it. I'd try plotting it first.
Might have to give it a try, at least I wouldn't have to worry that the lid mightn't fit every way.

I'm with watson, I think I'll give it a miss.

Sketch up should be able to produce all your angles if you've made it correctly.
I'll pass on making it. But I'm keen to see you try.
I've been looking at some woodwork where the drawers are irregular - either Dr Seus style craziness or as if the drawers have collapsed or falling over. Not the most practical.... but then that's not a reason to do anything.

Pardon my ignorance, but given that you do not put any constraints besides inequality, why do you need to calculate anything? It seems to me that you can just make one side at a time with different angles, the second side starts with a corner to match the first etc. The last side is made to fit whatever gap is left.

Whenever I try to make anything like that. "outside the box" It always looks as though I've tried to make it square and got it wrong.

All the required angles, mitres etc are available in the sketchup file. I will be out of woodworking action till next year, so anyone else is welcome.
