    Default yes, Another box,..!

Hi All, Thought I would share some pics of my latest box. The thing about this box that made me happy was the result of the lid. Notice how you cant see any joints at all on the lid, except of course where the top of the lid meets the sides. They are all 45 degree joints, and this is my jig that I used to make them.

I hope that works, anyway here are some pics. All the timber is red mahogany.

    Hi Terry,

Yes, this box has your 4mm silky oak base in it, I should have mentioned that. Glad those ring inserts worked out fine for you. You will have noticed in my link, that I have done a bit of work on my DeWalt table saw since you called in here. Now made a cross cut sled and designed that bevel ripping guide, works great,...!

That's a really nice box Paul. Also the bevel guide is a neat idea.I would like to pinch your idea and build one for my saw.

Thanks Safari, I searched for an idea on the net, about my bevel ripping guide, but couldn't find any. I had this one in my head and it worked out well. I really only intend on bevelling short pieces of timber for box making, so its perfect for that. The timber sits on that small "ledge", so hence the joints have to be spot on.

    Paul - very nicely done

Just finished a new crosscut sled for my saw, so your mitre doodad will be the next project. I assume that the small ledge at the bottom of the ramp is only held on because the saw cut does not run right through the sled? Either that, or its magic

I think I'll still be using veneered ply for the top panel of a box rather than solid timber, mainly for stability.

    Cheers

Hi Mr Brush, Yes correct, the saw cut does not run all the way along my "ledge" otherwise my ledge would fall off. The sawcut finishes about 2 inches from each end. The trick for the sawcut is, to make sure that the blade protrudes up through the guide/ledge exactly where it joins, but with the blade cut totally on the ledge side and zero on the guide side.

Then the clamps hold very firm the piece of timber resting on the guide. It's purely for making small boxes so I dont need a lot of length. Actually I start the cut by raising the blade up through the timber, that way saving on the commencement distance, then just pushing the sled through till the cut finishes.

Paul - thanks for the clarification

I've been trying to think of other ways of achieving the registration required, but will give your method a go first ! An excellent use of the MDF offcuts which I seem to accumulate rather too readily these days.

I really like the clean look of your box, and have never really been happy with the traditional ways of inserting the top panel.

Thanks again Mr Bush. My new DeWalt table saw, I just love it. And especially since I bought the top of the range DeWalt 80 tooth blade for it. I couldn't have done this on my old triton WorkCentre, which I have now sold. I do miss it, it built all the timber furniture for this house, but I thought it was time to upgrade. The soft start motor and the fine blade makes this sort of work very easy.

That lid is very tricky. Very nice.

That sled intrigues me too. I've read a lot of box making books and can't recall such innovations. Congratulations.

    Thanks Evanism,

Yes that sled I didn't find anywhere, so I made the idea up myself. Matter of fact I used that sled again today, that box is already sold so I want to make another very similar one. An extra 10mm taller this time, just to make the tray a tad deeper.

    The sled works brilliantly,

A cat out of the bag...after my post, I went down the shed and started to put a sled like this together.

Will use it tomorrow if it's isn't stinking hot.

That is a really neat lid, Paul, many thanks for sharing.

Did you make the lid thickness exactly the same as the thickness of the box sides?
    regards,

    Hi there Denque,

And yes, the lid is exactly the same thickness as the sides, probably about 11mm. If it wasn't the same thickness I don't think that the concept would work. The lid wouldn't sit neat and flush into the sides,

    Regards, Paul
