YIN and YANG
This beautiful piece of Old Australian Cedar has been resurrected and now has a second life as a box. I used Yin Yang as the theme and made the motif from Huon Pine and Beefwood.(Well, I was told it was Beefwood!)
The trays and base of the box are lined with pigskin suede. The box was finished with Hard Burnishing Oil and then waxed. The trays are meant to continue the Yin and Yang theme and are also totally made from cedar.
The box is 190mm square x 85mm high. There is a stop to ensure the lid only opens to about 95 degrees.

dark cedar
That was dark varied grain cedar Ruddy, beautiful, was it dense and hard to work?
Great work (as always)

Beautiful box Ruddy.
I like the unique lid design, very complimentary to the rest of the box. The trays look great too.

Thanks all for the comments.
Greg, the cedar was quite dense and was a deep rich dark red. Because of the cranky grain I made sure the plane was sharp when I roughed out the curves and I allowed sufficient waste for sanding the final shape.
It is such a beautiful species to work and I knew that this piece would yield a unique box....Only wish I could find more like this. And my head I'd be a scratchin'
