    Default Box with divided sections

Does anyone know an easy and accurate way to make the slots for the horizontal and vertical dividers in a simple box, such that the dividers slot into each other. My router table and bandsaw don't give me enough room from the fence to make more than 1-2 slots. Do I need to use an overhead router with a jig and straight bit, then square off the cut by hand with a chisel? Leigh

Doug Stowe has a DVD called "basic box making" and he covers this in detail along with other box making tips - I highly recommend it.

He basically uses a cross cut sled on his table saw with stop blocks.

I'd need some measurements to be sure but one way I would approach this is to group alike parts together and run them over the table saw using the mitre gauge as the guide. You would set the height of the blade to the length of the slot you need and then holding the grouped work pieces perpendicular to the table run them past the blade. Obviously this is a little general as I would need know the thickness of the wood, length of slot etc. Needless to say, you would need an accurate saw and mitre gauge as well as carefully marked measurements. Hope that is helpful.

This is a good little jig for just such cuts as you require on the table saw.

    Default Amazing tool

Thanks for your reply. I watched the video and it is, as you say, very impressive. It makes the slots just perfectly. Being an amateur -- enthusiastic but not not that skilled -- I am going to have to watch it half a dozen times before I fully understand how it works.
    Many thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like a good solution just have to be careful when doing the slots at either end of the piece (missing fingers, etc). Not sure whether I'd end up with a slight 'rounding' at then end of the slot because of the circular saw blade? Will give it a try. Thanks again.

Many thanks for your reply. I have recently ordered two box making books from Amazon and the book you mention may be one of them. If not, I'll get the DVD or the book. Thanks again.

I have had great success with the router with the aid of the template guides when I was constructing a wine rack simply be producing a simple jig

I use the Kerfmaker as suggested by Mailee.....a must have tool for accurate slots of any type IMHO.

You don't need to worry about the bottom of the kerf as it will be hidden inside the joint when put together...only becomes a problem if you have unused slots.

Very interesting jig, how about providing a sketch of the parts with dimensions.
