Default Problem Centering Leigh Finger Joint Template

I have just purchased my new Leigh D4R and have spent the last two days trying to centre the Finger Joint Template F2M as per instructions in the manual. (refer section 1-8, 1-9 and 1-10).

I have followed the instruction manual to the letter and still can’t get it centred so am appealing for help.

Here are some interesting measurements and comments that explain the problem:

    • When the Centre pin is inserted the bar protrudes 32.92mm on the left of the finger comb and 15.08mm on the right, hence it is not in the centre. To be correctly centred on the comb the bar should protrude 24mm on each side.

    • The overall comb length is 656mm therefore the centre hole should be 328mm from either side. However the so called centre hole is actually 344mm from the left and 312mm from the right.

    • The support bar is 676mm long hence we could assume the centre hole should be 338mm from either end, unfortunately mine is 364mm from the left and 312mm from the right side. I have been back to the supplier (Carba-Tec Australia) and they are just as baffled as I am hence were unable to help. We then checked other Leigh 24 inch Finger Joints to suit the D4R (Code LGH-1618F) only to find they all had the identical measurements.

Obviously I am missing a point here and urgently seek assistance as my inability to get past the first chapter of the instruction manual is very frustrating.

    Thanks in anticipation.

There is an addendum sheet which may or may not help. It's here.

If all the F2M templates have identical measurements, it's fairly certain that that's how they're meant to be. Following the sections you refer to in the manual seems to be simple enough, with the larger combs facing away and the centre pin in place. Aligning to the clamped vertical piece of wood also looks simple enough, but it seems that the addendum sheet uses the opposite end of the jig - perhaps that's significant, perhaps not.

Once locked in position with the allen key wrench, the manual makes no claim - AFAIK - that the physical measurements relating to the actual jig are important, or even relevant. Have you tried actually making any joints yet?

I have the same jig and the same template. If you still have difficulty, let me know and I'll haul them out tomorrow and do a physical check for you. I can't do it right now as I'm a bit busy with other stuff. HTH (Don't forget the Oz/UK time difference)

    Rayintheuk,

Thank you so much you have solved the problem.

The link to the updated user guide provided the correct information.

My new D4R was purchased only two weeks ago however the back page of the User Guide is dated 02/06. The update at 1-9 and 1-10 have been modified and the problem is solved though curiously the update now has an error at 1-9 where it refers to 1/4" as 12mm!!!

Following the original instructions makes set up impossible as access to the rear right scale screw is restricted.

I will advise Leigh Industries and the Aussy distributor accordingly.

    Thanks once again.

    Hi Mike,
No one else seems to have an answer, so I have spent a few minutes on the Leigh web site. There is an 88 page document at http://www.leighjigs.com/data/%20%20...DE%20FEB06.pdf which is a user guide for the F2 and F2M. Without the jig in front of me I don't know if this will help but it sounds more detailed than what you are using. (I have a D1600)
I can't send it to you it is 20mbs so you will have to download it yourself. I hope this helps.
    regards
    Billy

THIS REPLY WAS POSTED IN THE BOX MAKING FORUM AND TRANSFERRED HERE. UNBEKNOWN TO ME THE PROBLEM HAD ALREADY BEEN SOLVED.
