Thread: pantograph, should have listened in class

Today has been a bit of a play with ideas in the mind kind of day (scary). I acquired a Taylor Hobson Pantograph machine a fair while ago, like this one (this is not the same machine, but the same model as what I have)



It has a fair few of the accessories, and one day I will look to fully restore it and learn the art of engraving, but in the meantime I was thinking it might be interesting to make up a bracket to mount my 1/4" router. Then I started thinking back to early high school geometry, and realizing that I either didn't listen or my memory is failing.


So my question, for those less geometrically challenged, will this work without messing up all the ratio's:

* Say the centre of the router is 70mm away from the centre of the pantograph spindle, and placed so that a line running between the centre of the router and the centre of the spindle is perpendicular to the arm (a line run out at 90 degrees).

* If I place a second pointer also 70mm away from the centre of the existing pointer (and at 90 degrees to the arm the pointer is on).

Will the new pointer and router act the same as the old pointer and pantograph spindle??



Hopefully this image makes things less confusing than my writing. I was thinking that I may need to put the pointer on the other side too?

The obvious answer is to get some scrap and play around, but if someone wants to answer this geometry question, it might save me building mounting bracket 1.2 and step straight into mounting bracket 3.0
