As you are well aware constructing a jig capable of producing a number of different joints takes time to get the final results. Also writing the procedures that are required for each joint. Even this week I have tried to add another joint to the collection; that is the 'Finger Joint' with a variety of sizes for different materials. I am aiming to have every thing ready for the Perth wood show in Sept this year. There is quite a bit to do to get some video and written material once I have produced all the solid material.
What I have been aiming for is to produce a number of joints with a limited number of processes that we have been using in the past, for instance the simple Tenon requires a number of processes to complete depending on the method we use, whether it be with the table saw or the router in the table mode, each method involves a number of processes. What I have achieved so far with the tenon is that I have been capable of producing the final shape with only one process, and that includes rounding the sides of the tenon for easy entry into the mortice which was also produced with the router. I should also add that I am looking at a SAFER method of producing each Joint

    Default Super Jig

Super Jig (Multi-functional Jig) capable of producing a number of woodworking joints will be introduced at the Perth Wood show next month, demonstrating a number of the joints that can be produced with the router and the Super Jig

    Default Super Jig

I have been working on the computer drawing what might be the final joint to be completed with the 'Super Jig' and that is the dovetail suitable for small box making and today I put into practice the procedure of constructing the joint.
I thought I would post my first attempt I made on a couple of pieces of 80 x 10mm flooring boarding. This has been the greatest challenge so far, to produce the joint on my 'SuperJig'. Tomorrow I will see if I can produce a small box.

    Default Super Jig

As stated above the dovetail may be my greatest challenge yet with the super jig. I am still working on it and as the woodshow is still three weeks away i may get lucky

    Default Super Jig

Today I had some success producing the Dovetail Joint using the same princple set up as the super Jig. The Super jig can be used all that is required is a change to the templates required to complete the joint. Enclosed is my final result so far now to producing a small box

Question Where are you selling this?

    Tom,

Which shows will you be selling this at?

    Will it just be Perth?

    Thanks,

    Default Super Jig

At this stage I have not made any plans for selling anything other than the idea of how template guides will offer an alternative way on how to use the router, if you have not been using them before. I have borrowed three routers from Hitachi and three from Makita along with my own seven routers that will be taken to the show, all set up for different processes, to enable a greater number of joints to be produced during the demonstrstion sessions, this will save a great deal of time for those who care to stop by, as I will not be changing the cutters and setting up the routers for each joint I will demonstrate. I have also produced a number of 'Mini Super Jigs' for this purpose also, each one set up for the joint selected with the templates, Cutters. When I first began designing the jig I was unaware of the versatility of the Jig as I produced new joints and processes. Emphasis has been placed on Safety with the router in all of the processes I have managed to achieve so far. Who knows there may be other joints I can produce with the same Jig.
I'll post details of the reponse to the jig shown at the show once people have seen it in action.
I hope to put together the series of processes on DVD for those who will be unable to attend the show as Perth is a long way off.

    Hi Tom,

I may have missed it but just out of curiosity will the plans be made available or is this purely just for you to demonstrate what could be done?

    Cheers

    Talking Canberra Show

    Tom,

Seeing this jig in action, meeting the new owners of Gifkins, and saying "thanks!" to Jim Davis are the only things keeping me interested in the Working With Wood Show.

I am looking forward to seeing this in action

I have still a great deal of writing to complete all the processes that can be completed with the jig also I decided that I would wait to see the re-action to the jig and how it performs, before I spend the time writing. Also I find I can still add variations to the jig to improve the method of producing certain Joints.

Hopefully some of the members who visit the forum from Western Australia will be in attendance at the show and they can inform other forum members from the Eastern States of the advantages of producing the Jig for themselves.

Over the years I have produced a number of presentations at the various wood shows intoducing the techniques I developed with the aid of the template guides but there seems to be little interest from the average router user as the greater number still insist in producing the 'Super' table to support the router and are not interested in the use of the guides.

I am convinced that next week when I ask the question "Has anyone considered using a 40mm Guide"? the response will be negative, the same as it has been for over the past 20 years I have been trying to get others to "Get more from their router" with the aid of the guides.

Getting on in years, this may be the last time I have the opportunity to demonstrate the versatility of the router with the guides in use. All I have been saying is that you will get more from your router if the guides are used. You will still require the Router table method as some processes completed on the table are not suitable for completion in the plunge mode. (I have three routers set up in the table mode for that reason)

There could be other processes that could be produced on the 'Super Jig' but I have come to the end of my experimenting with the jig at the moment, to allow me to complete the processes I have developed so far in preparation for the Perth Wood Show.

This presentation is not something that happenned over night or in just one week; I can honestly say I have been preparing for the Show for some months now.

Thanks Mark for your interest; What I intend putting together is a DVD of the processes I will be presenting at the show this will be quicker than writing each step of all the processes required to produce the various joints, and also the raised panel suitable for small door construction.

I have set aside times of 5 demonstations each day of the show with an introduction to the Jig and a variety of joints produced at each presentation
