I suspect it will be in full sun/rain/sleet/snow etc which is very harsh on most finishes. The usual response from the experts is to use an enamel paint to maximise the time between maintenance refinishing if you want it to keep looking good because the UV plays havoc after a time.
If you are prepared to "refinish" it more regularly (eg. every 12 months or so), you could look at a decking stain or a marine finish. I'm going through the same dilemma at the moment with a hardwood timber letterbox with both choice of timber, design and finish.
Cheers
Phil"Come sit down beside me" I said to myself, and although it didn't make sense,
I held my own hand as a small sign of trust, and together I sat on the fence.
