    Default Colour Matching to Redgum - Help please

    Hello All,
    I am new to the forum, and I am hoping to get some advise from all of the talented people on here.
    We recently purchased a large redgum table made out of very old timber. After looking at lots of chairs to match and finding nothing we liked, we came across some timber chairs that we liked, but not the colour, so we bought them raw so that we could stain them to match (malaysian rubber wood - I know - but at least they are solid). After a failed attempt using a stain and varnish, we are thinking that our only option is to use something like the Feast and Watson proof tints to mix and match.
    My question is, is it purely a trial and error of getting the right colour, or is there some secret that I should know about? Is this our best option to match the old timber? The colour is more like a rich red/jarrah with some black thrown in.

    Default matching timber colour

    it would be a trial and error effort to match the colour. try different samples on the underside of the chairs to see if you can get a close colour match. when happy with it then you can safely do all the chairs. if you get it wrong well, it is the underside and not too much of an issue. Feast watson have synthetic stains or you can try Livos natural oil/wax finishes. they have some nice stains. give them a call, they are always helpfull.

    Yes it is.
    You have to some trial and error to get the color matched. I always try some pieces of wood panel when matching the color. We never start finishing the product before we feel happy on the sample panel.
    Your trial and error will be less if you have lot experience.
    You need to get use with the wood type and finishing material you deal with since each of them has a specific character.
