    Default darken sapeele???

    Hi

I am new to the world of finishing the furniture i make, since it usually just gets painted.

On this project the client has asked for a french polish, which i can do within reson. So we decided to use 18mm sapeele vennered MDF,Now since the order for the materials has been made and arrived he has chainged his mind to a darker colour, so i am thinking stain it, then french polish it. can i have some sujestions on what my options are and how to do them please.

    Thanks for you time Adam.

How big a piece are we talking about Adam? And have you got some scrap you can practice on. If you are not practiced with staining things can go terribly wrong at this point. Mind you it is easy enough to learn and practice on a piece of scrap and get your technique wright.

Its a fair big unit 9 seperate units, like kitchin units in design. 6 of the units are W=660 D=550 H=750 and other 3 are W=660 D=550 H=1200. I do have quite a lot spare, as i sent a cutting list to my sheet supplier and they sent me all the offcuts.

I have never really used stain before, could you roccomoned any, i know sapeele its quite a light wood but i am after a dark finish like mahogany.

I know thats kinda askin a lot but its worth a go. thanks for your reply

    Default Dye Stains

    Adam,

Here, is an article on dye stains, having some knowledge should help you understand about these stains.

    http://iswonline.com/ArticleLanding/...ContentID=1381

There are other stains commonly used in finishing furniture, they are the pigmented stains. They come in many more colors then the dyes. You should have no trouble finding the color your looking for.If you look at Ubeaut you will find what your looking for.Follow the advise to first make up start to finish samples, so when your done you finish work will be what you wanted

If you would like to know more about pigmented stains let me know. I will send you another article.

    Good Luck

    Mac S

There you go Adam, MacS has you covered, good size project. Make sure you charge the dopey customer enough after messing you around with the colour. Just do plenty of practice runs. You generaly need to have everything layed out and get a good clear run and be consistent with your application of stains.
    Good luck
