    Default clear finish for furniture?

The clear oil based varnishes (matt and satin) i have tried are all quite thick and gluggy. They are prone to air bubbles which make for a less than perfect finish.
Is there a thinner varnish that goes on smooth which still provides decent protection for a hardwood benchtop?
EDIT: the panel will be the top of a buffet in a family room. So it will see only light use. Not like a kitchen benchtop

    Whats the bench top for?

Woodwork, kitchen, sewing, kids bench ????

To make a finish runnier some finishes, even oils, can be thinned with solvents - read the can etc.

For surfaces likely to cop abuse, oils that can be used in touch up mode with minimal effort are one option, THRU TO a 2 pack finish for a harder wearing surface

I like wipe on polyurethane but it's not really suitable for a hard working bench like a kitchen.
I used it on my grandson's (not hardwood) craft bench.

Look into the Whittle Evolution hard wax oil. Easy to apply, clear and very hard wearing. Perfect for buffet tops.

I use Livos Countertop Oil for all of our Jarrah benchtops.
