    Default Food grade varnish/sealer

    G'day fellas, i am making a redgum burl beer mug So i need a food grade varnish which will make it water tight and safe to drink out of. I have been having some trouble finding something like this so if you know of a product it would be great to hear about Cheers, Jordan

    Well there is always shellac. Apparently they coat pills with it so you can eat it if you want. Also I think there are oil finishes like "organoil Hard burnishing oil" which is food safe. Or you just leave it raw. I have a vague recollection of beer and stout being used as a sealant on terracotta tiles so If you only use the mug for beer and only rinse it if you really have to I doubt it would leak. :think Unless your burl has holes in it.

    Cheers mate i think i will give the shellac a go, ahaha yeah there are a few holes so i think thats the best choice

    I would be careful using shellac on a beer mug.

    Shellac is sensitive to water and alcohol so your nice clear finish may end up milky white.

    MAybe you could use it as a sanding sealer, then oil it?
