Exterior finish for ply
Hi, I'm making a kennel for my dog at the moment and the exterior walls are going to be C/D ply. I want to paint it a solid colour, I'm not after a clear finish. Knowing absolutely nothing about paints, sealants etc. can anyone provide some links to sites that might be able to fill me in. About all I know is that I can apparently use wattyl solarguard. I am 'googling' away but thought I'd directly ask the people in the know as well.

I've just been reading about Bristol's Weathertough Forte exterior paint. Might pop into Bristol tomorrow and make some enquiries. Would love to hear from anyone with experiences good/bad regarding this paint.

I think any of the outdoor paints would be OK. I've used solaguard before and it was fine.

I know this is not recommended on the can but I use an oil based undercoat first when coating any exterior timber product with waterbased products like Solarguard. That came from the advise of an old painter and the stuff we have treated that way holds a lot better then when the solar guard is not primed first.John

I agree TOTALLY with John use an oil based undercoat.THe retailers will say not needed but Ive seen the difference also gleened the info from an ole fella... Tonto

All the above are fine in my book, but if you want it to last then pick a light colour. The lighter the shade the cooler the paint stays and hence the longer it lasts.

Thanks guys, was hoping to have the kennel finished tomorrow and start painting wednesday however was cutting some moulding to go around the door entrance with the drop saw and didn't realise my metal ruler was under the moulding :eek: needless to say my blade is in need of replacing and so the project continues to drag on... I'll get to painting it one of these days !
Frightened the crap out of me when the saw went BANG! and stopped abruptly, I should take a pic of the ruler... saw made a fair attempt at cutting through it.
