    Default Gloss black finish

    Hi all,
I am making a box to hold and display a wedding album. The client has some very specific requirements all of which I have been able to meet .......... so far?
The remaining challenge is that the inner surfaces are to be gloss black. I could simply brush or maybe even spray the inner faces but I am worried about overspray or paint otherwise getting to where it shouldn’t be? It could be safer for me to stain the inner surfaces black and then spray with clear gloss so that any overspray wouldn’t be conspicuous. Has anyone had success, or otherwise, with black stain and clear gloss? Does it give the same ‘depth’ as a good spray paint?

I used to use a clear laquer finish with black trim.

Spray the whole lot with sealer, sand back the bit to be black. spray black with masking, sand off any overspray black and give the whole lot a coat of finish.

The black was actually an industrial enamel but thinned with laquer thinners so any reaction happened in the gun and not on the job,

    Royal Royce ,
We’re once painted full gloss black by hand (Well actually not there hands but a brush).

    So simple answer is yes.
More complicated answer is brush on a black high gloss paint.
A good many coats 4/5 maybe.

Then start sanding , I would start at about 180 and go as high as the patients will allow.

You could then either just use an auto polish 3M products are good.

Or spray with a high gloss clear and repeat the sanding again.

    Cheers Matt.

Can you line the box with acrylic sheet, something like this Suntuf 900 x 600 x 3mm Black Flat Acrylic Sheet | Bunnings Warehouse

I’m not real happy with the outcome ..... but the client is?
It has been hard to photograph the box but I’ve been able to give them the colour they wanted, mildly ‘distressed’ and “doesn’t compete with the photo album”.

The inside finish is the stained, WOP’d and waxed floating panel surrounded by a gloss black sprayed border which I sprayed by masking the panel and not the outer face but by ensuring that I always sprayed from the inside out? I used a humble gloss black spray can and lightly sanded between coats.
I’ll try to take some better photos.

    Looks great.

One way to get a super gloss is by mixing 2/3 clear to 1 part paint for future ref.
