Default Hard wax oil over previous finish

Kitchen benchtops need a refinish and I'd like to try a hard wax oil (Whittle Evoluton).
Banchtops were finished with Cabots water based benchtop finish about 4 years ago.

Can I get away with just sanding or will i need to strip off the old finish somehow?

I'd be surprised if any hard wax oil can be used successfully over a coating like the Cabots, which is most likely a polyurethane varnish. Not what you wanted to hear, but better to do it right and only do it once.

As Aldav said, best to strip, sand and do it right once.

The tables in my daughter's restaurant just had this treatment and they came up really nice. She used Intergrain stripper from Bunnings and Whittle Waxes HWO on my recommendation only because I have not used the Feast-Watson HWO and didn't want to risk it based on my experience with F-W wipe on poly.

Paint stripper in the kitchen sounds like fun!
I have a small section of the bench-top that isn't fastened down so that might be a good candidate to test out whether sanding is enough or if I need to strip the surface.
Might have to just reuse the Cabots bench-top finish again. It's been good but I have the hard wax already ...

    What about using a scraper?

I suppose you could also try a heat gun and scraper. Works fine on regular paint so I don't see any reason it wouldn't work on clear finishes. I've never done it though.

The Intergrain stripper is not particularly offensive. My daughter had done three tables and the doors to the restaurant were closed and I didn't think it was too bad. That said, I still recommend ventilation.
