Default Hardwax oil for wooden coasters?

    Hey guys,

I need to finish a set of wooden coasters that I just made and I was looking for a finish that is durable, waterproof and heatproof (hot mugs).

I was thinking to use hardwax oil but I couldn't find anywhere information about their heat-resistance.

Has anyone ever had any experiences in finishing wooden coasters with hardwax oils?

Also, do you know a no VOC/low VOC hardwax oil easy to find here in Australia?

    Thanks for your help!

There are plenty of choices in the hard-wax-oil finish category.

I've used Livos (you can get this from Timbecon, and other stores) and Whittle Waxes products (from Carbatec and other stores also I'm sure).

As for their suitability as a finish for coasters; I'm not sure how well they would do. I recently made sets of coasters for gifts. I used automotive clear spray on lacquer in cans. The result was outstanding.

Hey mark, thanks for your tip.
Can you share with me the brand you used? I also have a couple of questions...Is the lacquer heat resistant? have you tried it? and doesn't it create a film on the coasters?

    Thanks

Sorry for the delay, I've been offline for a while.

I just used whatever clear spray product Supercheap sells. Most of the people I gifted these to would be placing mugs containing hot beverages on them. I made them for my colleagues before we all returned to the office early this year. I have not had any comments of failure so I am going to assume they are okay.
