    Default Help needed connecting an air regulator

    Hi, my first post.
    Many years ago I purchased a spray gun and found my compressor wasn't quite up to it. I think it may have just needed a bigger tank. Well, I have a new project under way and I want to try and get it all working again but I can't remember how it all goes together. The air regulator (image attached, I hope) has four threaded ports around it.
    1. has the gauge, 2. has no hole in the casting, 3. has a hex headed plug screwed into it an 4. has a hole through into the centre with what looks like a brass shaft in the bottom of it.

    What connects to what?

    I am hoping to spray some mountain ash table/bench tops with wattyl Clarithane Clear Topcoat (two pack polyester polyurethane) - what pressure should I use?

    Looking at the picture, which is similar to mine, the threaded hole on the right is for the air inflow and the outflow should be on the left side. The gauge at the front is correct and the release/pressure valve at the top is also correct.

    The hole on the right is probably the inlet as you say, but the one opposite (on the left) is blind, like it's a spare for some other confguration. There is a chrome plated pug in another hole on the back (near the bracket) Is that the regulated supply?

    Then yours is different from mine ( apart of the colour ).

    Mine has the outlet on the left. I presume your left hole is for fixing it to a wall and the back one is your outlet but others may know more.

    I take it there are no little giveaway arrows?

    The outlet will more than likely be opposite the inlet. HAs the reg been dismantled at all, like the guage removed etc?

    Can you show us a pic of the other side please Tf.

    Normally, the air goes in one side and out on the opposite side. As Outback hinted at, there usually are direction arrows on top of the unit. And the gauge can be placed on the other side to where it is now to accomodate feeding from L ~ R or R ~ L

    Thanks everyone. From all the various answers I have finally figured it out. As "Outback" said , there are in fact some giveaway arrows (Hard to find though), and it is a little different, the air goes left to right. Thanks again to all who answered. My first post and a successful outcome!

    Maybe I'll put something online after I've got it all working and had a go at spraying the topcoat.

    re the pressure.... it will depend a lot on the consistency/viscosity of the product. I use 60 psi for regular paint but I had to reduce it to 35 psi for Wattyl furniture and deck oil - which is about the same viscosity as turps. I think the idea is to start at a lower pressure and bring it up towards 50/60 psi if it isn't going on right (on a test piece). Good luck
