Help, tryin to stain pine like darkened cedar, redish brown
Hey. i'm in toronto, canada. (by the way)
I'm try to match pine doors to previously old cedar ones in the house. i know the two different grain types make this impossible, i'm just lookin for a similiar color an to fade the grain of the pine so it doesn't stand out as much. some pine grain when stained looks black an white.
does anyone know the proper techniques, i've been trying varathane stain but can't make it work consistantly.
what steps r in order
should i stain with a certain grit, or use wood conditioner
any help would be great thanks...

the pine is brand new doors untreated an clear. except one i have try to match with condintioner an then stain. it does look good an i will have to strip it, the grains are too contrast.
the color of the cedar doors is a redish brownish mahogany. it looks like they were treate with a clear satin coat and then darkened with age.

There are heaps of stains on the market that you can try and match with your cedar doors, problem is pine doesn't come up that well with staining, it tends to highlight the grains and looks dark and light in places. Maybe a coat of shellac prior to staining will help eliminate some of these effects. Matching the colour exact may have to be a trial and error process I'm thinking.
Reality is no background music.
