    Lightbulb Kitchen Benchtop Renovation

    Hi all. I would be super grateful for any advice on the following project...

    We have a Recycled Oregon Kitchen Benchtop. It was installed about 17 years ago. It has a two pack coating. It doesn't look too bad, has quite a few scratches, a nice beetroot tin dent, and chipped coatings on the edge of the bench that is mostly used. We'd like to remove the two pack (think this is the same as polyurethane?) then sand, stain and re-coat.

    My first question is....is it possible to remove the two pack with a planer?

    and ....can anyone recommend what brand/product to use for staining/re-coating? (The oregon is really orangey coloured and would prefer to match the timber in the floor boards/furniture with more of a teak colour.)

    Any ideas and advice gratefully received!

    One thing with a two pack coating or poly type finish once the coating is scratched or chipped the whole lot needs to come off. Yes it can be done with an electric hand held planner and could be quite messy. If it was me I would remove the bench top and take it outside where dust does not matter. Take off the old coat, sand it smooth and then see if the orange is still as deep as it was originally. Please also note the direction the grain is going so you do not get too much chip out.

    I am not sure on the stain to use to give you a teak(brown - light brown?) type finish. I would go for a poly based finish as that is more heat and water resistant. I am sure others would be able to suggest a particular brand and what to watch out for.
