    Default Mixing / Matching Wood Stains

    G'day all.

    I'm trying to increase my knowledge and avoid some of my previous costly, time consuming, hit & miss errors in matching wood stains.

    After trying most types of stains - water, turps, spirit they all have a problem when you need to mix colours to match an existing item or environment. What I'm chasing is an easy way or formula/method for generally changing colours.

    To my eyes [which are not all that brilliant] all wood stains seem to fall into 3 general areas - yellow, red, brown which when mixed give all of the colours on the charts. Years ago I can recall seeing colour wheels which would give you a colour when this is mixed with that etc but I've never seen [or can find something like this] for stains.

    My preference for use are spirit stains but I'm wanting to go beyond the commercially available tones.

    Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

    Yes the basic color to make stain are the red, yellow, black and blue.
    The other color ( except white) can be made with these basic colors.
    The brown color is the perfect mix of that basic color.

    The simple tool to mix color is with the triangle color.

    Many thanks for the reply and info - it should help a lot from the quick look I had at the links you provided - I will now need to study them in detail - as I suspected, there is a lot to learn.
