Best way to protect hardwood near doors
Ok so every house I have lived in with hardwood floors - the floor by the front door takes a lot of abuse and you want to be careful about what to put on the wood to protect it. Short of pulling out wood and having a tile section................what kind of mat do folks use that does not scratch up or react with today's finishes?

I'd be thinking more about what happens when it is raining and someone runs through the doorway to reach shelter and slips on a non gripping mat. To me, a hardwood floor means using a rubber (or similar) backed rug - the standard backing used on rugs sold at rug stores - if you want something to strip sand from someones shoes.
In any case, it is more likely to be sand getting between a shoe and timber or between a moving mat and the timber that will damage the floor anyway.
