    Default Refinishing weathered exterior windows

    Hi everyone,

I have some WW2 era exterior casement windows (Silky Oak as best I can guess) that have been exposed to a lot of sun damage.

They've gone years without a coat of paint and the wood is solid but the grain has opened up a bit.

I want to paint them with a Dulux exterior acrylic but wondering whether I should treat the timber before I undercoat/top coat.

Any ideas on a magic solution to restore the timber to its former glory?

    Thanks for your help guys.

Getting back to bare timber is a good start.

I had some frames like that in the first house I bought and did the following:

    # Sand to bare timber

    # Mixed Pollyfiller with exterior acrylic paint rather than water so I had
a mix slightly stiffer than toothpaste.

    # Applied mix liberally and worked well into timber, particularly cracks.

    # Prime/undercoated after filler had dried and was sanded.

    # Two coats of exterior paint to finish off.

Worked a teat! Forty years on and the job is still good.

    Thanks Artme.

    I like your idea.
Was thinking to prime with Dulux oil prep coat then apply the exterior acrylic/poly filler putty mix then 2 topcoats.
Will let you know how it goes.
