Question Removing old Finish - Milky Residue

    Hi All,

I am removing old oil and wax finish from an old table. I am using metho and steel wool, but am finding this is leaving a milky residue.

Any tips on what would be a better solution? I intend shellacing the piece when all the preparation work is done.

    Thanks again.

I think you would probably be better with turps rather than metho, because wax doesn't desolve in metho very well at all.

I'm a little concerned about the steel wool too, as any left behind could cause discolouration of the timber.
If wax is the only finish you are dealing with bare wood in the end & neil is always firm about no steel wool on bare wood.

maybee a scothbrite would be better.

you will probably want to clean up with metho after or perhaps thinner.

Id be interested in other better qualified comment.

    cheers

    Marls,
I'd be using "prepsol" or similar. Spraypainters use this to remove oil and wax residue before spraying.

    Default Removing Milky Residue

    Thanks for the response guys.

Can I ask what is prepsol? Is this something that can be readily purchased from places like Bunnings?

Default Removing ol finish - Milky Residue

Whoops I posted a new thread instead of doing a reply - must be all the metho and turps in the air ! !

Anyway, I asked where can you purchase prepsol? Not something I have heard of before.

    Silly Me
