Default what stain to use with shellac

    Hi,

I wish to apply a stain to Aust. red cedar and then finish with a few coats of shellac. I have tried Wattyl Traditional Stain, but the shellac tends to wash some of the stain off. Does anyone know of a stain (such as Feast Watson etc) that can be used with shellac?

    cheers

All water based stains/dyes, all chemical dyes, most turpentine stains. No alcohol based stains as they are pulled off into the shellac.

How do you apply the shellac? If you apply the shellac by wiping, padding or brushing, sure it will resolve some of the stain underneath.
The best way is to coat the shellac by spray.
Or you can try to tint the shellac with a dye or aniline then apply on your wood.

    Good luck
