Staining Blackbutt.
Hi All. I have a piece of Blackbutt 240mm x 70mm x 2.5m that I wish to use for an inside step. It's probably 50-60 yrs since it was originally installed into a house roof. I have sanded it back and it is a light brown/yellow, and I would like to color it a bit redder. Any suggestions?
By the way, I'm not 100% sure it is Blackbutt but it looks like it. It's very hard and very heavy.

There are a lot of solutions out there. A decent paint store will have sample boards showing what the different solutions look like on different timbers
The stain that you use will depend to some extent on whether the step will get sunlight on it. Spirit stains - like the Wattyl range - are very easy to use and can be mixed to get the colour/effect that you want but are not light-fast in sunlight.
The most light -fast stains are probably oil-based pigment stains but they are all a bit murky compared to spirit stains and will also need to be finished with a compatible oil or polyurethane. There are some pigmented polyurethanes that let you apply the stain and finish in one go. I do not know if those are tough enough for a step though.
