    Default stiffening the nap

    Hi.
I'm sanding a Qld cedar piece and have lots of 'fur' . I have used dilute white shellac to stiffen it up a bit for sanding with some improvement.

I wonder whether Hard Shellac used in the same way might stiffen the fur more effectively.

    Any experience or opinions please?

    Regards,
    Rob.

Stick with the white shellac. The hard shellac is recommended for use over a first coat of ordinary shellac. I usually sand to 800, clean with metho, coat with thin shellac and let it dry for about 4 hours just to harden up properly, lightly sand with 800 again, clean off with white spirits and apply finish of your choice.
