Default Stripper for clear coat on Vic ash window frames

    Hi folks,

I have some 3 year old Vic ash window frames that need some love. Im not sure exactly was put on them after installation, but I di remember it was a single slap coat from the builder, and it was done quickly, just to stop the frames greying before the build was completed.

(I know, they could’ve done better on this, but actually, they were great crew and delivered high quality build, so I’m not upset about this relatively small detail).

So, the windows that get the afternoon sun are flaking, greying, and grain is starting to open up. I fixed one with a ROS and hand sanding in the nooks and crannies, then finished in cutek extreme. Came up okay, except there’s a few spots of old finish that make it look patchy.

I think better to use a stripper first, to get rid of the finish. I reckon they’d have used a cheap water based clear coat.

Ive never used strippers before. Can anyone recommend a trusty product for this situation?

For anyone discovering this later... I just used Poly Paint Stripper, which is methylene chloride.
It worked fine. Leaves a slightly gummy residue, but it cleaned up okay with water, and was good enough for my needs.
