Thread: Super high gloss painted finish

I have never done this but have asked the question before. What type of wood are you using?

I know for me I am doing a sub and everyone was saying if I wanted to get a finish like that I needed to prep whatever timber to a nice smooth finish. Then apply however many coats of primer to get the start nice and smooth. Light fine sanding between if needed.

Then apply color and then apply the finish all spray gun type.

I dont have a spray gun so I have just been using aerosol cans for the primer. I dont know on the rest but I hope this helps.

Deep black and a 2 pak spray on should give a start for you to buff to a high gloss. But I am just throwing ideas out there.

The only other idea I was told was that I could use sanding sealer for the timber. Then apply coats of color. Then apply Hard Shellac. If I did this method I would buff the shellac with Ubeaut EEE but this is just another option. I am sure there are plenty om here who know better.

Have a look here I have used this on a number of cabinets...generally MDF, sealed with sanding sealer,rubbed back and then top-coated.

They also make a product called casket Lacquer...see the description, but have no idea what wear properties it has. Need to talk to them about that.

The cabinets I have finished in black I used 60% Gloss as any higher shows finger marks very easily.

I use the 60% gloss black.....I see its not listed on the site pages but I just go down to the Mirotone outlet at Wacol and get it over the counter...also use the Clear Lacquer and their excellent Sanding Sealer.

I spray everything....in some cases you have to spray some components before assembly as is hard to finish into corner's.

To make high gloss finish is tough work. Especially in the black color.
You need to do good preparation from your unfinished product. The surface has to be neat, even and smooth from the beginning. If there some defect or imperfectness on your raw wood, it will be seem clearly in the high gloss finish.
You better use the Polyurethane, Acid curing, or Polyester since you may need thick film built. You need to spray your material, since the brush application will always leave the brush mark that will be problem in the high gloss finish.
You may consider to do rubbing process for your finish.

I agree with wisno polyurethane is the way to go try Aquacote its a water based version that goes quite glossy and it doesnt matter whether you spray, roll or brush it.

wisno, do you spray a black gloss coat on first, then apply several coats of clear polyurethane?

yes it is.

Your finishing step should be as follow:
1. Filler, let dry and sanding
2. PU black base coat, spray let dry and sanding
3. PU Black base coat , spray let dry and sanding ( You may need to apply the PU base coat several time until your black color cover the entirely surfaces and the even surface is obtained.
4. PU sealer, spray let it dry and good sand
5. PU top coat
6. Rubbing or polishing ( if necessary)
