Can't see why it should be any different but make sure it is all covered as Silky Oak causes reactions in many people and it gets worse with more exposure. If the wood is all sealed there should not be a problem.

You want something that you can wipe down, so I'd try Estapol but test it first on a hidden piece to make sure it sticks to the existing finish (which you'll need to sand lightly first).

Sanding the timber right back to get rid of the dark shellac finish would be a big job as shellac penetrates the timber.
Otherwise, just wipe it down with metho and sand lightly. You can mix pure meths with shellac flakes to get your french polish - ask your hardware man about the proportions or do a google on the web. But french polish isn't a good hard wearing finish for around kids.
For your crack, get some wood glue and squeeze it into the mating surfaces, then get a couple of splints like chop sticks, straighten the piece and tape the splints on with masking tape while the glue hardens.Cheers, Ern

For kids cot i would consider one of the polyutherethane finsihes. Solid, water and everything proof, non toxic to kids teeth.
I use Carbothane which is very good, 3 coats sanded will give it a good long lasting seal. Estapol is similar.
Oil is good but for kids i would think they could suck on it and get some in their mouths pretty easily.
good luck
