veneer restoration

Hi to all the finishing gurus

We have a Jarrah veneer coffee table that has developed a rough feel to the surface. It feels as if it needs a good sand and polish, but as this is a veneer and therefore probably very thin, is it possible to rejuvinate this surface in any way???

you could probably pressume its aged in the 1930's so the veneer should be quite thick, well certainly thicker than today's equivilant. Whether you can rejuvenate the existing finish really depends on why the surface feels rough. It the veneer itself is starting to dry out and move a little you really need to refinish the piece. If its just the finish itself starting to deteriorate you may be able to recover the finish without sanding back to bare timber.

Thanks Shane.....it was bought in the late 80s and feels as though the surface of the veneer itself is packing up. It is not uneven as such but feels like it could be sanded smooth but I feel this may result in destroying the veneer.

yeah well if its only that old, then the veneer will be relativly thin. Still not impossible to sand back though, but if you stuff up its not easily repaired. Try one of the finish reviver products on the market and see what happens, Neils has a good one check out http://www.ubeaut.com.au/ubhome.htm for more info..
