Default 2 vol 1 tone circuit

    Hi.

I am considering using a 2 vol 1 tone circiut in a DIY guitar. Basically the circuit of a Fender Jazz bass.

Setting aside pot & cap values, is there anything in particular to do with the circuit itself that would make it unsuitable for guitars as opposed to basses?

    eg: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support...=std_jazz_bass

cap value is ok for single coils
i think the volumes may be interactive
i did similar 2 tones master volume + selector on a 2x p90 and found that the tones did interact with some unexpected but quite interesting results

the guy who bought the guitar loved it - i used it it as my #1 for 6 months and counted it as my fave blues axe so far out of 9 builds

    I didn't explain clearly enough.

I don't want a selector switch but rather a mix of the volume switches like on a jazz bass.

    I haven't seen this on a guitar.

    OK didn't understood.So you want a volume /tone /balance pot configuration?
My Gibson Marauder (76 issue) is configured that way.

Hang on to the values for your pick-ups and get yourself a balance pot and solder it the Jazz Bass style. I love fiddling around with her controls

the selector switch has no effect on the circuit - as if switch is in centre position with both pickups open - the one i built i vol 2 tones i vol was interactive with both pickups open - so as i said the volumes may interact

i havent acually played a jazz bass for may years so i forget how the circuit works

you could build a test rig with a single string and space at one end to experiment with variuos tone vol and pickup wiring schemes

if you ask the question on a bass forum you could find out how it works on a j bass - pretty standard circuit - been around for years - if it was me i would give it a try

on that diagrams the tones are not actually interactive if you look closely. the reason they can become interactive is one pot gives a short to ground when completely turned down for the output (not just that section of it)

they have actually switched the wires around on the pot so that the pickup output is on the wiper, giving a constant resistance to ground (the resistance of the pot) but still shorting the signal from that section to ground. smart little detail. glad someone put this up, as its a good idea and is something i will be using on the bass when i put the full wiring in.

you should probably double the pot value for what you would put in if were a single vol single tone circuit to get the same loading as you would usually prefer.

umm hopefully were still on the same track
this the circuit i used on the guitar i talked about earlier with interactive tone controls

how would i modify the above to make the tone controls dedicated to one pickup only when both are open

to get the tone controls indipendant for the pickups you need to put them on the leads coming from each pickup. so you would put the tone controls before the selector switch. (i think that is what you wanted)

this is more of what you want. the green wire coming from your selector switch is just a ground, not really part of the circuit. (its just the same as how you ground a bridge and every other metalic part)
