    Default 2x12" Speaker Cab Build

    Hey all,

This is my first project post so I hope I can shed some light on the subject. First off I've gotta give credit to my Old Man who has leant his considerable woodworking skills to this project, I couldn't do it without him (and his tools )

So the project is an upright 2x12" cab to house one Celestion G12-65 and one Weber Ceramic Silver Bell 12" Speaker.

For the timber I chose 300 x 25 DAR (290 x 19mm) Radiata Pine. I managed to pick up some really nice straight pieces without any big knots or imperfections after a bit of a search (helps working in a hardware store where I can put aside the best pieces as they come in )

The speaker baffle is a piece of 19mm Hoop Pine Ply. 1/2" Baltic Birch ply is ridiculously hard to come by in Sydney and even more ridiculously priced so I went with the thicker Hoop Pine ply which is free of imperfections and should have the same rigidity as the thinner Baltic Birch.

First step was to cut timber to length on the table saw -

Then it was time to dovetail the ends with a router and a dovetailing jig -

    The finished product -

Coming up will be the installation of the baffle beading, assembly of the box (gluing the dovetails) and routing the round over on the edges.

Watch this space.....or follow my progress on my blog (http://speakercabinetbuild.blogspot.com) where there's also plenty of info on local parts suppliers for all aspects of the project and links to sites I found helpful in the design and planning of my speaker cab.

    Cool.

Is there a reason that you are using Celestion & a Weber together in the same cabinet?

I'm interested, is the a particular sound that you are after?

    Hi Cliff,

Yeah the Celestion is a great speaker with nice tight lows and great mid range but it lacks a bit of sparkle on the top end. I feel Ill be able to achieve a bit more top end with the Weber as well as some added bass response. It also has a bit more headroom than the Celestion so should clean up the tone a bit too.

Thats my theory anyway, I have another 2 x Celestion G12-65's in backup in case I want to go with two Celestions after all

    Beauty, ta.

I have heard that mixing brands in the same cab can fill in holes but I have never tried it.

I've never actually mixed drivers before either so this will be an interesting experiment. I got a lot of help from people on various forums with speaker choice.

Ill let you know how it sounds when I've got it all up and running.

Very cool. Nice little project. I have mixed AlNiCo and ceramic magnet speakers before in the same cab to get the same effect you are after. Why settle for one or the other when you can have the best of both worlds? Can't wait to see the finished product!
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
