3 Tone Sunburst Strat - Nitro spray paint
G'day Peoples
I'm in the process of finishing my strat in 3 tone sunburst in nitro spray cans.
Ive done the black edge, the amber and now the tobacco brown.
It hasn't exactly worked the way I was hoping. Way too brown. I almost wish I left it at 2 tone now.
I def. did the black edge way too thick, and hence the brown is way too thick. I was sort of hoping it would blend in a lot more.
What solution is in order ?
Do another black edge over the top?
Do another couple passes of the brown on the outside edge itll get darker?
Clear coat the prick of a thing and chalk it off as experience, its one of a kind lol ?
One thing I think I'll defintely do is sand back a bit of the red/brown on the left side of the pickguard to see a bit more of the amber.
It's my first crack at it so it's been a helluva learning experience to say the least. I really wanna get this thing clear coated. It's still gotta cure for at least a month. I wanna hear the MickB's grey bottoms I got for this damn thing.
Cheers Pics below.
Black and amber applied. I was quite happy the way this turned out. way too thick on the edge though.
A day or so after I sprayed the tobacco brown on. I think it has darkened a little bit since then.
It looks like its darken a bit here. hard to get a good light for the shot.
As you can see its still pretty brown.
What to do...

Id say you have 3 choices. Either leave it or sand it back or try to fix it.
Doesnt look too bad from here, but at the end of the day, its your project. So if you can live with it........ or go with your gut or first thoughts. Its no good going on through life wondering what could have been.
If your careful and take your time you could wet and dry the black out, couple of beers and some patience. Realistically, id keep in mind that your going to rub it right back. In saying that, then you can try and fix it. If it doesnt work out you can have a clean slate in a 24 hour turnaround or so, Its not that hard to take the paint off. Im sure its happened to most of us, i know ive been caught a few times and on a much larger scale.
Just my 2 cents.

Having another quick look at it. Looks as if it just needs more black around the outer.

I say strip it back and start again. You want it to be perfect, not regret it later on.
Start with lighter colours first. Black is always last. Its really difficult with aerosols to get a nice smooth transition, but looks like you've done a pretty good job on this one.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'm leaning towards spraying the outer edge black again over the brown and sanding a lit bit of the brown / red back from the left of the pickguard. I really don't feel like stripping the whole thing and goin again.
It's strange because the spray guides I was going off from stew-mac and reranch both spray the black edge first.
Anway i'll post any updates on what I decide to do in the next couple of days.
