Default Update of where I'm up to

    Hi all,
Been a couple of months since my last post.
A couple of pix of dust/shavings''' making.
Please not the spokeshave (refer other acoustic tools post a few below)
I've only got the spokeshave and a Stanley No4 Jack (I think) plane. Someone
will tell me. Anyhoo, with this build, I'd agree with what Peter Brown said somewhere,
that I use the power tools to remove most of the excess timber, then use hand tools
to get the finer results. And I learnt the hard way, NEVER use an electric planer!!

Do you mean electric planers are gay or my neck is?
    Talk about a tough marker
This will be a deep set neck for an SG not a neck thru

Electric Planes have their place - on large body parts not necks. For necks - I use the grinder with a rubber backing and sanding disks to get the rough shape and then rasps and files for the finer shaping.

i modified a grinder to take sanding disc's

i dont like it though, it just sends a whole lot of fine dust everywhere, when im done my arms and the grinder have a thick layer of dust on them

do you find the dust annoying? or is it just mine....

Mate I hate the dust. I have to wear a mask and goggles with a long sleeve shirt to boot as the fine stuff gets everywhere.

But I was surprised at the control I had. When I carved my first practice neck the basic shape was done within 30 minutes before I was upto using the rasp to fine tune the neck radius. For a novice like me it gave me the confidence to try again now that Ive stuffed my second neck (dropped and broke headstock ). Ill never get that first build done at this rate!!! LOL. Im onto neck 3 tonight, and Ive learnt from my mistakes so fingers crossed It should be a better neck.

    Sorry for hijacking the thread!!

    Basses!! More photos please.

    Cheers
    Manny

Its quite alright to hijack this thread. I think we'd all like to see you get this
    neck done right.
So manny, please ask us how we do our necks if you need. I'm sure we all
    shape necks a bit differently.
Half round rasp and file is what I use when I get to the fine work.

I'm planning on trying the sanding disk in the angle grinder when I come
to bevelling the edges on my current SG build. Need to practice some time though

    My acoustic neck shaping procedure:

    1. mark up facets with pencil.
    2. plane to facet lines with block plane. Spoke shave used close in to neck and headstock where blockie wont get in. Keep marking up and planing to facets until neck is rough shaped to your satisfaction. See Jim William's guitar making book for details on this technique.
    3. Once facets are planed in I go in with a dragon rasp (from Stewmac).
    4. Final finishing off done with a length of 80 grit sand paper followed by 120 grit worked shoe shine style across the neck. Ireggularities in the neck can be checked by viewing against a light source and feeling with your fingers. Try using the hand you dont normally use (left if youre right handed)..apparently your lesser hand is more sensitive to irregularities....an old panel beaters trick apparently.

    Default some more help please

    Hi again,
I've been hunting that great resource called the internet and can't seem to find a reference for the side profile bevel dimensions for a SG body ()

There seems to be enough plans to manage the top profile bevel but not the side

    Anyone have any ideas??

    Michael

    G'day Michael.

I'd be hitting the guit shops and looking first hand at the profiles that way.
