yup
not technically exactly like a HO as i ommitted the 'cathode follower' stage (but did the extra gain stage which the vjr really shines with) and added spring reverb and a variable voltage regulator (attenuation via regulation of voltage to power tube)...
one of the heads also has octal socket tht allows the usage of the bigger bottles like 6L6
but yes...you are right the EL84 when driven hard in single ended mode is a beautiful tone indeedLooking for

well...
...it can cost yer life if one is sloppy and not careful about safety
but getting past these preliminary issues...
modding a vjr into a HO-like entity is actually quite cheap
extra hole drilled...extra preamp socket...extra preamp tube...
extra bits of wires/caps/soldering guides
spring reverb in head
join sewatt.com if interested in doing something similar ...i putted me schematic there and lotsa helpful ppls over thereLooking for

A question for you, Knackers......... What are the pups and from where?
And does the amp kit come pre-wired?
Old picker was doing some Lil' Dawg amps a while ago which just required a cab to be made and speaker sorted. Nice little project.
